Since 2023, IRCC can invite candidates who meet specific attributes — a strong French-language ability or recent work experience in a targeted occupation — instead of ranking the whole pool. These rounds usually have lower cut-offs because only eligible candidates compete.
Categories used in 2026 rounds
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare and social services occupations
- Trades occupations
- Transport occupations
- Physicians with Canadian work experience
- Senior managers with Canadian work experience
- Skilled military recruits
Earlier years also included STEM, agriculture and agri-food and education rounds.
Eligibility
Occupation-based categories generally require a set amount of continuous work experience in an eligible NOC within a recent period. The eligible NOC lists change between category "versions", so always check the version named in the round on IRCC's rounds page. A category draw doesn't replace the requirement to qualify for FSW, CEC or FST.
