IELTS vs CELPIP for Express Entry

Last reviewed 2026-11-02 · Sources: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Both tests are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, along with PTE Core. Your CRS score depends only on the CLB level each result converts to — not on which test you took.

Practical differences

  • Scale: CELPIP levels map one-to-one to CLB, which makes targets easy to read. IELTS listening needs a higher band (8.0) than the other skills for CLB 9.
  • Format: CELPIP-General is fully computer-delivered, including speaking. IELTS speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner.
  • Content: CELPIP uses Canadian English and everyday Canadian contexts.
  • Availability: IELTS has a larger global network of test centres; check where and when each is offered near you.

Results are valid for two years from the test date and must be valid when you create your profile and when you apply.
