Super visa for parents and grandparents: requirements, income and fees

Last reviewed 2026-11-08 · Sources: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Quick answer

A super visa lets parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens, permanent residents or registered Indians visit for up to 5 years at a time, with multiple entries for up to 10 years. The host must meet a minimum income (from $38,002 for a family of 2), and the applicant needs 1 year of private health insurance with at least $100,000 of emergency coverage and an immigration medical exam. Fees start at $100 plus biometrics.

Who can apply

At least 18 and living in CanadaImmigration medical exam with an approved panel physician
Meets the minimum necessary incomeAdmissible to Canada and a genuine visitor

Visa-exempt parents and grandparents can still get a super visa; IRCC issues a letter to show at the border, and air travellers may also need an eTA. If you only want to visit for 6 months or less, a regular visitor visa is the alternative.

Host minimum income

Count the family size: the applicants, the host, the host's spouse or partner, their dependent children, anyone else the host is hosting on a super visa, and anyone the host still has a sponsorship undertaking for.

Family sizeMinimum income the host needs (CAD)
1$30,526

4$56,724
5$64,336
6$72,560
7$80,784
Each additional person+$8,224

The host proves income with the CRA notice of assessment for either of the 2 tax years before applying. Alternatively, if the host earned at least 75% of the minimum in the last tax year, the applicant's own income can make up the rest. The host's spouse or partner can co-sign the invitation; siblings can't.

Health insurance requirements

  • Valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry, and for each entry.
  • At least $100,000 of emergency coverage, covering health care, hospitalization and repatriation.
  • Paid in full, or in instalments with a deposit — quotes aren't accepted.
  • From a Canadian insurance company, or a foreign insurer authorized by OSFI and doing insurance business in Canada.
