Super visa insurance: what IRCC requires

Last reviewed 2026-11-08 · Sources: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Quick answer

For a super visa, IRCC requires private health insurance that is valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry, gives at least $100,000 of emergency coverage for health care, hospitalization and repatriation, and is paid in full or in instalments with a deposit — quotes aren't accepted. It must come from a Canadian insurance company or an OSFI-authorized foreign insurer doing business in Canada.

InsurerA Canadian insurance company, or a foreign insurer authorized by OSFI under the Insurance Companies Act and listed as federally regulated, that issued the policy while doing insurance business in Canada

Common mistakes

  • Sending a quote instead of a paid policy or a policy with a deposit paid.
  • A broker or claims administrator named instead of the insurer — IRCC notes brokers and administrators aren't insurance companies and won't appear on the OSFI list.
  • Coverage that ends before you leave Canada. IRCC says to renew the policy to keep coverage for your whole stay.
  • A policy under 1 year or under $100,000, even if it's cheaper.

Comparing policies

Policies that meet IRCC's minimum can still differ a lot. When you compare quotes, check:

  • The deductible and how it changes the premium.
  • How pre-existing conditions are treated and the stability period required.
  • The refund policy if the super visa is refused or the visitor leaves early.
  • Whether monthly payments are offered with a deposit (IRCC accepts this).
  • The age bands — premiums usually rise with the applicant's age.

We don't recommend specific insurers. Confirm any insurer that isn't a Canadian company on the OSFI list of federally regulated financial institutions.

The rest of the application

Insurance is one part. The host also needs to meet the minimum income and write an invitation letter, and the applicant needs a medical exam. See the full super visa guide, including the income table.
